Slashing
MarketsDefinition
Penalty mechanism in proof-of-stake systems where a validator loses a portion of their staked capital for misbehavior or downtime. Two main triggers: equivocation (signing two conflicting attestations) and going offline.
Ethereum slashing penalties: ~1 ETH for offline; up to 32 ETH (full stake) for major equivocation. Slashing is rare in absolute terms (low single-digit basis points) but the existence of the threat keeps validators honest.
