Momentum Monitor

Every US-listed stock ranked by momentum: how much each gained over the last 12 months, leaving out the latest month. The top fifth are the leaders.

Universe: every US-listed company the Stock Screener covers, one row per company (the S&P 500 plus every listed company and REIT), with at least a year of trading history. Momentum is the total return, dividends included, from 12 months ago to one month ago; the latest month is left out because the biggest recent winners tend to give some back first. Rankings are recomputed every night from daily prices after the close; prices and daily moves on screen are live. The long-run record comes from Kenneth French’s data library at Dartmouth: every NYSE, AMEX and Nasdaq stock since 1927, with the top fifth by the same 12-month-minus-one-month return rebalanced monthly and compared with the average stock. The live record in the chart buys the leaders at each of the last twelve month-ends and compares them with every ranked stock, equally weighted. Small and thinly traded companies are included, as they are in the research; their prices swing more. Momentum describes recent price strength only. It says nothing about valuation and is not investment advice.

About this tool

A ranking of every US-listed stock by price momentum: the total return over the last 12 months, leaving out the latest month. The top fifth are the momentum leaders. Search any company or narrow the list to one sector.

Momentum is the most robust price pattern in finance research: stocks that rose most over the past year have tended to keep beating the rest over the next few months, across two centuries of data and every major market. It fades after about a year and can reverse sharply in rebounds after a bear market.

Frequently asked questions
Why leave out the latest month?

Over a week or a month the pattern runs the other way: the biggest recent winners tend to give some back. Skipping the latest month removes that noise from the score.

Why rank every stock instead of the biggest ones?

Momentum was found across the whole market, and the research behind it ranks every listed stock. A list of the largest companies only sees the winners that already became giants.

What happened to the Technical Monitor?

It was replaced in October 2026. Its RSI, MACD and moving-average rating was tested on the 100 largest US stocks and ETFs since 1978 and showed no edge at any horizon, while momentum did.
