M1

Macro
Definition
Money supply measure including M0 plus checking accounts and other liquid demand deposits. The most "spendable" measure of money. Around $18T as of 2024.

Pre-2020, M1 excluded savings accounts; after a Fed methodology change, savings deposits now count, making the headline number much larger and less directly comparable to historical data.
