Estate tax

Taxes
Definition
Federal tax on the transfer of large estates at death. 2025 exemption: ~$13.99M per person ($27.98M per married couple); top rate above the exemption is 40%.

The 2017 TCJA doubled exemptions but is set to sunset at the end of 2025 — exemption could fall back to ~$7M per person from 2026. Sophisticated estate planning (irrevocable trusts, GRATs, FLPs) can multiply effective exemption.
