Hyperinflation
MacroDefinition
Inflation rising at extreme rates — typically defined as 50%+ per month. Money loses meaningful value within days. Historically triggered by money-printing to fund war spending, sanctions, or capital flight.
Modern examples: Weimar Germany 1923, Zimbabwe 2008, Venezuela 2017-present, Argentina chronically. Hard assets (gold, real estate, FX deposits) preserve value; cash and nominal bonds get destroyed. Recent US runaway-inflation fears (2022) were never close to hyperinflation territory.
